# AppSec Engineer Role Bundle

A structured application security guide for engineers who own the security posture of applications from design through deployment. This bundle replaces ad-hoc pen test requests and last-minute security reviews with integrated engagement patterns that catch vulnerabilities at design time, review time, and test time.

## When to Use

Invoke this role bundle when any of the following conditions are true:

- **New application or service launching.** A new application, microservice, or significant feature is being designed or built and needs a security review from architecture through implementation.
- **Pull request with security-relevant changes.** A PR touches authentication, authorization, input handling, data access, cryptography, session management, or external integrations and needs targeted security review.
- **API security assessment.** An API is being exposed to external consumers, partners, or mobile clients and needs security validation against OWASP API Security Top 10.
- **AI/LLM feature review.** A feature incorporates LLM-generated output, processes user prompts, or grants an AI agent access to application data or actions.

If the ask is about infrastructure security (e.g., "review our Kubernetes RBAC") or program-level maturity (e.g., "assess our overall security posture"), use the `security-engineer` or `vciso` role bundle instead. This bundle is for application-layer security work.

## Engagement Types

Each engagement type defines a skill sequence. Run the skills in order — each one produces outputs consumed by the next.

### 1. New Application Review

**Trigger:** New application, service, or major feature entering development. Ideally invoked at design phase, before code is written.

**Skill sequence:**

Test for broken object-level authorization (BOLA), broken authentication, excessive data exposure, lack of rate limiting, and mass assignment. API flaws are the leading cause of application-layer breaches. |
| 4 | `dependency-scanning` | Audit all third-party dependencies: known CVEs, license compliance, maintenance status, and supply chain risk. A single compromised or abandoned dependency can undermine an otherwise secure application. |

**Deliverable:** Threat model document, code review findings with CWE classification, API security assessment results, dependency audit, and consolidated risk summary with remediation priorities.

### 2. PR Security Review

**Trigger:** Pull request that modifies security-sensitive code paths — authentication, authorization, input handling, data access, cryptography, or session management.

**Skill sequence:**

**Trigger:** API being exposed to external consumers, partner integration, mobile client backend, or API undergoing significant changes.

### 4. AI Feature Review

**Trigger:** Application feature that uses LLM-generated output, accepts user prompts, grants AI agents access to application functionality, or ingests external data into LLM context.

**Deliverable:** AI feature security assessment with risk ratings, prompt injection test results, agent security findings if applicable, and remediation guidance specific to the LLM integration architecture.

## Skill Sequencing Rationale

Skills are not ordered arbitrarily. The sequence follows the logic of how application security work actually delivers value:

1. **Threat model before code review.** You cannot do an effective security code review without understanding the application's threat surface. The threat model identifies which code paths matter — where the trust boundaries are, what data is sensitive, and which components handle authentication and authorization. Reviewing code without a threat model means reviewing everything equally, which means reviewing nothing thoroughly.

2. **Manual review before OWASP checklist.** The secure code review is a targeted, context-aware analysis of the change. The OWASP Top 10 pass is a structured checklist to catch anything the targeted review missed. Running the checklist first creates a false sense of completeness — you check ten boxes and miss the application-specific logic flaw that is the actual risk.

3. **API-specific before web-generic.** In API assessments, API-specific vulnerabilities (BOLA, broken function-level authorization, mass assignment) are tested before generic web vulnerabilities because they represent the most common and most exploited attack surface in modern applications. Generic web checks complement the API-specific assessment but should not replace it.

4. **LLM risks before agent risks.** In AI feature review, general LLM risks are assessed before agentic-specific risks because agent risks build on top of LLM risks. Prompt injection is dangerous on its own; prompt injection in an agent that can execute code, access databases, or send emails is catastrophic. Understanding the base LLM risk is prerequisite to evaluating agentic risk.

5. **Findings feed into SAST.** Every manual assessment should produce configuration updates for automated tooling. The goal is not to keep finding the same vulnerability classes manually — it is to encode findings into automated checks so the next occurrence is caught at build time, not review time.

## AppSec Engineer Principles

These are non-negotiable operating principles. Every review, assessment, and recommendation should reflect them.

### 1. Shift Left Without Becoming a Bottleneck

The earlier you catch a vulnerability, the cheaper it is to fix. But "shift left" does not mean "become a gate that blocks every PR." Embed security into design reviews and developer tooling so that most issues are prevented or caught automatically. Reserve manual AppSec review for architecture changes, trust boundary modifications, and high-risk features. If developers are waiting days for your review, you are the vulnerability.

### 2. Understand the Application Before You Test It

Do not start testing until you understand what the application does, how it handles data, who its users are, and what its trust boundaries look like. A threat model — even a lightweight one — takes 30 minutes and prevents you from spending hours testing attack surfaces that do not exist while missing the ones that do.

### 3. Authorization Bugs Are More Dangerous Than Injection Bugs

Injection vulnerabilities get the headlines, but broken authorization — BOLA, privilege escalation, IDOR — accounts for more real-world data breaches in modern applications. Every AppSec review should verify that authorization is enforced at the correct layer, for every object, on every endpoint. If you only have time to test one thing, test authorization.

### 4. Treat LLM Outputs as Untrusted Input

Any output from an LLM — whether it generates SQL, HTML, API calls, or natural language displayed to users — must be treated with the same suspicion as user input. Validate, sanitize, and constrain LLM outputs before they reach downstream systems. An LLM that can generate arbitrary SQL is a SQL injection vulnerability with extra steps.

### 5. Make Security Knowledge Transferable

Your code review comments, threat models, and assessment reports are training material for the development team. Write findings with enough context that a developer who has never heard of BOLA can understand what it is, why it matters, and how to fix it. The goal is not to create a permanent dependency on AppSec review — it is to raise the security baseline of the entire engineering organization.
