# Chaos Notes System

A minimal, file-based personal knowledge system for managing notes. Every note is a markdown file with stable IDs that never change.

## Data Directory

Notes are stored at `~/.chaos` by default. The data directory and symlink are created automatically when you first run any script.

To use a custom location, set `CHAOS_DATA_DIR` environment variable.

If dependencies are missing (e.g. module not found errors), run `bun install` from `{baseDir}`. If the web server isn't running, guide the user to `{baseDir}/SETUP.md`.

## When to Use This Skill

Activate this skill when the user:
- Wants to **create a new note** or record an idea/thought
- Wants to **edit or update** an existing note
- Wants to **rename** a note
- Wants to **delete** a note
- Wants to **search or find** notes
- Wants to **list** their notes
- Asks about their notes, ideas, or personal knowledge
- Mentions "chaos", "notes", or "my notes"

## Note Format

Notes are markdown files named `<id>-<slug>.md` in `{baseDir}/data/notes/`.

### Frontmatter Fields

| Field | Required | Description |
|-------|----------|-------------|
| `id` | Yes | 21-character nanoid (lowercase alphanumeric). Never changes. |
| `title` | Yes | Human-readable title |
| `status` | No | Either `building` (actively working) or `done` (finished). Omit for seed/draft notes. |
| `tags` | No | List of lowercase tags (a-z, 0-9, hyphens only, max 20 chars each) |

### Internal Links

- Link to another note: `[[id]]` — title resolves at read time
- Link with custom text: `[[id|my custom text]]`
- Broken links render as raw `[[id]]`

## CLI

All operations use the TypeScript CLI at `{baseDir}/scripts/chaos.ts`. Run with `bun`. If the data directory has a `.git` folder, operations auto-commit and push changes.

**Hard rule:** do **not** edit note files directly (`~/.chaos/notes/*.md`). For any note create/update/rename/delete/tag/status/image operation, always go through `chaos.ts` (or wrappers that call it).

### Create a New Note

Creates a new note with generated ID, commits it (if git enabled), and prints the file path.

### Update a Note

**Important:** don't pass literal `\n` in a quoted string — it will render as backslash-n. Use a heredoc or temp file.

Options:
- `--status=building|done|clear` — Set or clear the status
- `--tags=tag1,tag2` — Set tags (comma-separated), or empty to clear
- Content argument is optional; omit to keep existing body

### Rename a Note

```bash
bun {baseDir}/scripts/chaos.ts rename "<id>" "New Title"
```

Updates the title in frontmatter and renames the file. The ID stays the same.

### Delete a Note

```bash
bun {baseDir}/scripts/chaos.ts delete "<id>"
```

### Add an Image to a Note

```bash
bun {baseDir}/scripts/chaos.ts add-image "<id>" "/path/to/image.jpg" "description of the image"
```

- Converts to webp (quality 95), auto-orients, strips EXIF, resizes to max 2048px
- Saves image + sibling metadata `.md` in `{baseDir}/data/assets/`
- Appends markdown image link to the note
- Commits note + image + metadata together (if git enabled)

### List Notes

### Search Notes

Returns JSON array of matching notes with id, title, status, tags, filename, and path.

Example output:

### Read a Note

```bash

## Status Values

- **(omitted)** — Seed/draft, default state for new ideas
- **building** — Actively working on or developing this note
- **done** — Finished, shipped, or complete

## Important Notes

1. **Always use the scripts** for create/rename/delete — they handle validation and git
2. **IDs are permanent** — never change an ID, only the title/slug can change
3. **One note per idea** — notes evolve in place, no separate drafts
4. **Git is optional** — if `data/.git` exists, changes are committed and pushed automatically
5. **Web UI exists** at `/chaos/` for human use (agents should use scripts)
6. **Permalinks** — path to a note: `/chaos/note/<id>`

## Promoting a Note to a Project

Notes can be promoted to full projects with a stories backlog. Projects live at `{dataDir}/projects/<slug>/`.

The `project` frontmatter field links a note to its project directory, using a path relative to the data dir:

This resolves to `{dataDir}/projects/my-project/`.

### Three Workflows

**1. New project from scratch:**

mkdir -p {dataDir}/projects/<slug>
cd {dataDir}/projects/<slug>
git init
```

Scaffold a `.wile/prd.json` in the project:

Then update the note's frontmatter to add `project: projects/<slug>`.

**2. Existing local repo:**

Symlink an existing repo into the projects directory:

Then update the note's frontmatter to add `project: projects/<slug>`.

**3. Clone from GitHub:**

Then update the note's frontmatter to add `project: projects/<slug>`.

### PRD Format

The `.wile/prd.json` contains the stories backlog:

Array position = priority (earlier stories are implemented first).

## Web UI URLs

To share note links, you need the base URL where the user accesses the web UI. Never share the note id, because the user can't do anything with it. Always share the permalink.

Check if configured:

```

If empty, figure out the appropriate URL based on where you're running:
- Local machine: likely `http://localhost:24680`
- Remote server: ask the user what URL they use to access it

Once you know it, save it as a persistent environment variable so you don't have to ask again.
